「七宝焼を英訳すると"Enamel(エナメル)"となる。

Who is Zentarou Tsuchida?

He says "Ordinary Shippou-yaki is boring."

"Shippou-yaki" or "Enamel" in English has an image of Japanese traditional crafts.

"The image is poor and boring," says Zentarou Tsuchida, who is the master of atelier Uncle-Z.

He started Shippou-yaki as a hobby at the beginning, and now he improves Shippou-yaki to his current style.

"Traditional Shippou-yaki has a poor expression, which disagrees with my style."

"Shippou-yaki is Enamel in English. That means glaze which is a glass raw material is burned on a metal plate. It's the essence. It addresses more interesting expressions."

More than 50 years, he continues bringing what he wants and what he makes, regardless of the traditional Shippou-yaki. Even now, he is over the 80 years old, he is searching his new style of motifs.

The real face of "Uncle-Z", who is Zentarou Tsuchida

Zentarou was born and brought up in Fukui prefecture, and he met Shippou-yaki during working at trade company in Osaka.

It takes no time to participate in a Shippou-yaki culture school, and to start business in Nishinomiya, Hyogo prefecture.

He is working on some abstract creation, and besides, he is making owls, cats and instruments, which are enjoyable and familiar motifs. His designs for Japanese seasonal events, such as new year's ornaments, hina dolls and carp streamers, are also popular widely.

A craftsperson who is making original works half-century alone sounds as if he is stubborn and unapproachable person. But soon you will realize he is not such a person. Uncle-Z", or uncle Zentarou, is certainly a gnomish uncle just came from a picture book. He likes chattering, teas and sweats so much. In the irregular Shippou-yaki culture school, they affectionately call him "Sensei, Sensei," which means a teacher in Japanese.

He says that he still worries when glaze is burned on a metal plate in a heated electric oven at around 800 degrees. Only one or two minutes is needed for one time burning. If it is longer, best shades of color becomes impaired.
"I want to continue working until I have a loss of consciousness, " he says. Zentarou is still bringing his motifs at his atelier today.
